Artificial Intelligence (abbreviated as “AI”) is the science of creating machines and software programs that can perform tasks that usually require human intelligence. Key areas include:
- Learning from data: AI systems can recognize patterns, learn from examples, and make predictions. For example, streaming services use this to suggest shows you might like.
- Problem-solving and decision-making: AI can evaluate options and make decisions. Self-driving cars use AI to analyse road conditions and decide how to drive safely.
- Natural Language Processing (NLP): AI can understand and generate human language, enabling applications like virtual assistants (think Siri or Alexa) to answer questions.
- Perception and sensing: AI systems can interpret data from the world, like identifying faces in photos or recognizing speech in voice recordings.
AI ranges from narrow AI, which is designed for a specific task, to the idea of general AI (abbreviated as “AGI”), which would hypothetically be able to perform any intellectual task a human can or even more.
